This is the first Ukrainian translation of one of Shakespeare's masterpieces in the third millennium. The play's plot is based on the story of the legendary King Lear, who, in the twilight of his life, decides to retire and divide his kingdom among his three daughters. To determine the size of their shares, he asks each of them to say how much they love him. The two elder daughters eagerly indulge in flattery, while the youngest — Cordelia — refuses to flatter, saying that her love is beyond words. The angry father disowns the youngest daughter and banishes the Earl of Kent, who tried to defend Cordelia. Lear divides the kingdom between the eldest and middle daughters. Soon he bitterly realizes their terrible hypocrisy, but this realization comes too late... Our edition was prepared by two iconic masters of the modern Ukrainian cultural space — writer Yuriy Andrukhovych and illustrator Vladyslav Yerko. Their version of "King Lear" is a fortunate opportunity to experience the genius work anew, to keenly feel its eternal relevance.
